Continuing Education for massage therapists is important, regardless of where the therapist works. Not only is this usually a requirement for maintaining your legal status as a practicing massage therapist, but it also means that you are committed to providing the best possible care and experience for your patients and clients.
Becoming a Registered Massage Therapist means that the individual therapist has successfully completed a Massage Therapy diploma program of approximately 2200 hours, including over 330 hours of hands-on clinical practice.
Additionally, RMTs have to complete a rigorous Registration Examination process. In most regulated jurisdictions in Canada, this consists of a written exam, called the Multiple Choice Examination (MCQ), AND the successful completion of a rigorous and timed seven (7) station hands-on clinical examination, called the Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE). In Canada, regulated jurisdictions and professional associations require their members to undergo professional development. In some provinces, continuing education takes the form of mandated RMT CEU credit hours that must be reported.
In other provinces, continuing education and professional development are competency-based, as seen in Ontario’s STRiVE Quality Assurance and British Columbia’s QAP. Massage courses online for RMT continuing education are typically also eligible for competency-based quality assurance programs.
The requirements for becoming an LMT vary from state to state.
Where there are no regulations, manual and massage therapists can opt to become a member of a national organization.
Most regulated states require the successful completion of a minimum 500-hour Massage Therapy program and a National Licensing Exam.
