About the Course

This course explores how local applications of cold affect the human body, and how those effects can benefit patients.

Look at photos, watch video demonstrations, and read step-by-step instructions for performing a variety of local cryotherapy techniques for use in the clinic and by patients at home. Learn the therapeutic indications, precautions, and contraindications for each technique, and explore the differences between these techniques to find the best approach for each patient individually.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Approvals Information

Dexterity Professional Development submits courses for approval to regulatory colleges and associations across the world. Timelines vary and courses are submitted on a rolling basis. As approvals are granted, this section is updated. Remember to check back often!

Canadian approvals are updated upon receipt.

American approvals are updated upon receipt.

International approvals are updated upon receipt.

Under the CMTO’s new Quality Assurance Program (STRiVE), courses are no longer granted approval by the CMTO. It is up to the learner to demonstrate that a course is relevant to their learning goals and the STRiVE competencies. We have provided the description below to help the learner link the course to the STRiVE competencies. A course is often related to more STRiVE competencies than those listed.

The competencies below are established in the CMTO continuing education guidelines. This course addresses the competencies in many ways, including those described below.

Function in a client-centered manner.

This course provides the manual therapist with an understanding of the effects that local cryotherapy applications can have on the body, and prepares them to make safe and effective treatment decisions. The course focuses on indications, precautions, contraindications, and safe application of a variety of cryotherapy techniques, allowing the therapist to tailor their treatment approach to their patients’ needs and preferences.

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills.

This course explains the effects on the body as a result of local cryotherapy treatments. The manual therapist will gain an understanding of how local applications of cold can elicit responses in the body that can be harnessed for treatment. The focus on contraindications and modifications allows the therapist to ensure they make safe treatment decisions and know when to stop treatment or refer the patient. The therapist will be better equipped to make treatment decisions about local cryotherapy applications, as well as to educate their patients, because of the thorough understanding that this course provides.

Practice in a self-reflective manner.

In many cases, a number of techniques would be indicated, and it is up to the RMT to select the best technique for each patient. This course enables the RMT to learn about a variety of local cryotherapy techniques, exploring the benefits and drawbacks of each, enabling them to make thoughtful treatment and home care recommendations. The RMT that takes this course has reflected upon their practice and their decisions, and recognizes where knowledge should be enhanced. Through taking this course, the RMT draws on external information to achieve continuous learning and quality improvement.

Practice in a manner consistent with current developments in the profession.

This course was developed based on research and practice-based evidence that has been collected and documented for many years. It provides the manual therapist with a foundational understanding of the effects of local cryotherapy applications on the body, and teaches a variety of local cryotherapy techniques to be safely and effectively incorporated into treatment or taught to the patient for home use. The knowledge attained through this course can assist the manual therapist in determining if local cryotherapy can be an effective and appropriate addition to their current treatment plan. By including local cryotherapy in their practice, manual therapists can maximize their patient’s care by ensuring that the chosen modalities are appropriate for the patient and will be beneficial to their current condition.
