About the Course

This course provides manual therapists with an understanding of the risks an immunocompromised patient faces when they leave their home, and how they can adjust their practices to protect and better suit the needs of this patient demographic. The course prepares the therapist to take advanced precautions against the spread of infection, as well as to consider the patient’s underlying conditions in order to ensure the patient is safe and comfortable throughout treatment.

It also explores various considerations such as policies, procedures, and communication with patients and other healthcare professionals. The information is tailored to prepare therapists for work with immunocompromised patients, whether they treat them occasionally or regularly, as well as in the clinic, mobile, and inpatient settings.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Review how the use of personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, and screening can be employed to reduce the risk of transmission of infections.
  • Examine various clinic policies and procedures aimed at reducing infection risk.
  • Consider how to best build a positive therapeutic relationship with immunocompromised patients.
  • Learn how to build a professional relationship with the patient’s broader healthcare team.
  • Discuss the unique challenges and considerations a therapist is responsible for when treating immunocompromised patients in both mobile and inpatient settings.

Under the CMTO’s new Quality Assurance Program (STRiVE), courses are no longer granted approval by the CMTO. It is up to the learner to demonstrate that a course is relevant to their learning goals and the STRiVE competencies. We have provided the description below to help the learner link the course to the STRiVE competencies. A course is often related to more STRiVE competencies than those listed.

The competencies below are established in the CMTO continuing education guidelines. This course addresses the competencies in many ways, including those described below.

Function in a client-centered manner. This course focuses on how to best serve the needs of the immunocompromised individual, from the appointment time to the setting, to the assessment. It emphasizes working with the patient and their healthcare team when deciding how to meet a patient’s needs. It teaches manual therapists how to effectively communicate with patients in a manner that builds trust and empowers the patient while maintaining professional boundaries and conduct.

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course provides the RMT with the opportunity to learn safety precautions and considerations to ensure the provision of a low-risk treatment for immunocompromised patients. This includes recognizing when to apply extra precautions, and how to do so within the parameters of the RMT’s scope of practice. Additionally, the course highlights where the limits of the RMT’s scope of practice are reached, indicating the need to refer a patient to a medical doctor and/or collaborate with other medical professionals.

Practice in a self-reflective manner. This course enables the RMT to explore numerous precautions and professional considerations that can arise when treating immunocompromised individuals, and consider how to apply these concepts and suggestions to their clinical practice. The RMT that takes this course has reflected upon their practice and their decisions and recognizes where knowledge should be enhanced. Through taking this course, the RMT draws on external information to achieve continuous learning and quality improvement.

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course was developed based on current evidence and research-based practices for protecting immunocompromised patients in healthcare settings. It was created by an RMT experienced in manual therapy with a Masters’s degree in Medical Sciences and over fifteen years working in healthcare. The Dexterity PD promise is to evaluate every course on a biannual basis to ensure any developments or changes in the profession are reflected in course content. Thus, RMTs who take this course and adopt the recommendations can be assured that they are practicing in a manner consistent with current developments. A resource list is included in the downloadable guide to every course so that RMTs can conduct further research and/or confirm course findings. Any treatment recommendations are based on this research and the opinion and experience of the RMT who developed the course. All course content and recommendations have been evaluated by two additional RMTs to affirm the accuracy of the content. For more details, please see Our Quality Control Process.
