COURSE COMPETENCIES

The sample information on course competencies provided below is based on the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) Quality Assurance STRiVE program.

Associated Competencies

The competencies below are established in the CMTO continuing education guidelines. The descriptions below are general samples of competencies that may be addressed by courses in a particular series.

Function in a client-centred manner. The improved understanding of the gross anatomy and/or physiology of the particular region/system provided by this course enables the RMT to center the patient in their decision-making. This foundational understanding can be applied to improve assessment, treatment, and home care skills, allowing the RMT to more closely tailor their approach to the needs of the individual patient. 

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course enhances the RMT’s understanding of the gross anatomy and/or physiology of the particular region/system. This prepares the RMT for further learning regarding assessments, home care, and conditions related to these areas of the body. It can be immediately applied to clinical practice, enabling the RMT to better educate patients and apply critical thinking skills when listening, planning, and applying techniques. A more thorough, clear understanding of anatomy and/or physiology is key to recognizing the limits of the RMT’s scope of practice and when modifications or referrals are needed. 

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course is a thorough gross anatomy and/or physiology review of the particular region/system. The Dexterity PD promise is to regularly evaluate every course to ensure any developments or changes in the profession are reflected in course content. Thus, RMTs who take this course and adopt its recommendations can be assured that they are practicing in a manner consistent with current developments. Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course provides an RMT with the opportunity to fill gaps in knowledge of assessing common conditions in the particular region. This knowledge involves recognizing common symptoms and being able to apply appropriate tests to rule in/out conditions. By applying the knowledge taught in this course, the RMT is able to have a clearer clinical impression of the condition and formulate a more effective treatment plan.

Function in a client-centred manner. This course reinforces awareness of the benefits of providing a thorough assessment. It enables the RMT to have a vast variety of assessment tools to use to better understand the patient’s condition and treat the patient more effectively.

Manage time and resources effectively. This course provides the RMT with the resources to provide thorough and effective assessments which will allow them to manage their time with the patient more effectively.

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course was developed based on current evidence and research by an RMT experienced in performing clinical assessment of the particular region. This course is centred around client wellbeing, providing a thorough discussion of the various factors that must be considered when choosing to integrate this complementary modality  into a massage therapy treatment plan. This course provides the RMT with an in-depth understanding of the particular modality and the applicable uses. It guides the RMT to apply the complementary modality with therapeutic intent and how to integrate its use into a massage therapy treatment plan.

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course provides the RMT with the opportunity to better understand and integrate the complementary modality into a massage therapy treatment. The course guides the massage therapist in recognizing common complaints and making appropriate selections of factors pertinent to the complementary modality and ways of integrating them into treatment, within the parameters of the RMTs scope of practice. Additionally, the course highlights general/specific treatment indications, contraindications, precautions and possible modifications.

Maintain a safe work environment. This course provides details on safely incorporating a complementary modality into practice. It explains how the RMT should maintain the physical safety of all who enter the practice environment when using the complementary modality through a variety of recommendations, tests, and mechanisms.

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course provides the RMT with up-to-date information and knowledge regarding the particular complementary modality. Function in a client-centered manner. This course places the patient and their wellbeing at the centre of clinical decision-making by improving the RMT’s understanding of the patient’s underlying condition, the circumstances that contribute to it, and how it affects their daily life. A better understanding of the condition, its causes, and its effects enables the RMT to better identify and serve the needs of the patient. 

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course enhances the RMT’s understanding of peripheral nerves and compression syndromes and how they present and progress in patients. This enables RMTs to confidently and competently educate their patients about their condition, and what their personal prognosis might be. It recognizes the limits of the RMT’s scope of practice by exploring the many factors that affect the clinical outcomes that can be achieved with massage therapy. 

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course includes a review of relevant anatomy and pathophysiology to support the RMT’s thorough understanding of nerve compression syndromes. The Dexterity PD promise is to regularly evaluate to ensure any developments or changes in the profession are reflected in course content. Thus, RMTs who take this course and adopt its recommendations can be assured that they are practicing in a manner consistent with current developments. It sets the foundation for further, more detailed learning into specific nerve compression syndromes. The RMT who takes this course has reflected upon their practice and their decisions, and recognizes where knowledge should be enhanced. Through taking this course, the RMT draws on external information to achieve continuous learning and quality improvement.

Communicate effectively. This course provides the RMT with an in-depth understanding of  how to best serve the specific needs of the individual patient/client and how these specific needs may impact all aspects of a massage therapy practice. It teaches manual therapists how to effectively communicate with patients in a manner that builds trust and empowers the patient while maintaining professional boundaries and conduct.

Manage time and resources effectively. This course provides the RMT with guidance and templates for setting  practice goals and objectives in a timely and efficient manner.

Function in a client-centred manner. This course provides the RMT with knowledge to identify how patients may express specific needs/conditions and how to focus on the patient’s individual needs. It identifies how to create a practice that ensures the individual patient feels comfortable and safe at all times.

Apply the principles of sensitive practice. This course provides the tools needed to create a practice sensitive to specific patient needs. It educates the RMT on how to respond to a patient’s reaction during treatment and gives the therapist an understanding of various signs and symptoms that can relate to the specific need.

Treat others respectfully. This course allows the RMT to recognize a specific need in a practice setting and treat all patients with respect and fairness, and avoid acting in a discriminatory fashion. It provides the RMT with the detailed education on the specific need and associated symptoms  to enable the identification of patient behaviour and act in a respectful way.

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course provides the RMT with detailed information on a specific need from a detailed and comprehensive reference list. Thus, RMTs who take this course and adopt its recommendations can be assured that they are practicing in a manner consistent with current developments. Function in a client-centred manner. This course reinforces the importance of the pre-treatment assessment, particularly because the needs of a patient who belongs to a special population may vary substantially from one appointment to another. Various conditions and stages are covered in depth to enable the RMT to select the appropriate treatment, make treatment modifications as necessary, and provide education and remedial exercises as appropriate to the patient.

Apply the principles of sensitive practice. The special population patient may be particularly sensitive regarding appropriate therapeutic boundaries, and these boundaries may be different than with the general population. This course emphasizes the maintenance of appropriate physical and emotional boundaries with special population patients. Conducting a comprehensive pre-treatment assessment and being particularly attuned to patient sensitivities and boundaries will help to ensure a treatment respectful of the individual patient.

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course provides the RMT with the opportunity to fill gaps in knowledge in order to effectively treat the special population patient through all stages. This knowledge involves recognizing common primary complaints and making appropriate treatment modifications within the parameters of the RMTs scope of practice. Additionally, the course highlights high risk conditions where the limits of the RMTs scope of practice are reached, indicating the need to refer a patient to a medical doctor and/or collaborate with other medical professionals.

Use an evidence-informed approach in your work. This course was developed based on current evidence and research by an RMT experienced in the special population. The Dexterity PD promise is to regularly evaluate every course to ensure any developments or changes in the profession are reflected in course content. Thus, RMTs who take this course and adopt its recommendations can be assured that they are practicing in a manner consistent with current developments. Function in a client-centred manner. This course reinforces the importance of home care in a patient’s treatment plan. Various remedial exercise techniques are covered in depth to enable the RMT to select the appropriate exercises, make treatment modifications as necessary, and provide education on the proper protocols to the patient.

Communicate effectively. This course provides the tools to clearly communicate with the patient and ensure that they are confident in conducting remedial exercises as home care. The techniques and exercises are advanced, but the instructions are clear and easily explained by the RMT to the average patient.

Work within areas of personal knowledge and skills. This course provides the RMT with the opportunity to learn and become competent in various advanced therapeutic exercises for the particular condition/region. The course details the importance of therapeutic exercise as an intervention to various pathologies associated with the condition/region. The RMT will be able to effectively provide remedial exercise prescriptions for patients who present with the condition or pathologies of the region.
