Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy is governed by the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy.
The State of North Carolina requires the following to obtain a Massage Therapy License:
- Successful completion of a minimum 500 hour approved massage therapy program
- Successful completion of a national licensing exam approved by the Board – i.e. the MBLEx or the ABTE. (Note that the NCETMB, NCETM and NESL are only permitted for those who graduated in-state and completed the exam before December 31, 2010 or a graduate from out of state)
The Massage Therapist License requires renewal every two years.
Continuing Education Information
Massage Therapy License renewal requires the completion of 24 CE every two years. Of the 24 CE, a minimum of 3 CE must be in professional ethics. Business management shall not exceed more than 8 CE.
For the renewal period ending December 31, 2021, 2022 and 2023, all Continuing Education activities may be completed online. Typically, a maximum of 12 CE may be completed online.
The State of North Carolina* accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers in the CE Registry. The State of North Carolina also accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers approved by the NCBTMB.
