Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is governed by Maine Massage Therapy Licensure, Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, an agency within the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation.

The State of Maine requires the following to obtain a Massage Therapist License:

  1. Successful completion of a minimum 500 hours approved massage therapy program, OR
  2. Successful completion of a minimum 500 hours unapproved massage therapy program and completion of Core Curriculum
  3. Successful completion of a national licensing exam (NCBTMB or MBLEx)

Renewal of the Massage Therapy License is required annually by the date of the anniversary of license issuance.

Continuing Education Information

Massage therapists that are registered with a professional association may have additional continuing education requirements. Massage therapists should refer to their professional association for continuing education standards and requirements.

Most associations accept courses approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) and/or the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Refer to your professional association for details.
