Massage Therapy

General Information

Massage Therapy is governed by the Massage Therapy Board of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

The State of Illinois requires the following to obtain a Massage Therapist License:

  1. Examination
    • Successful completion of an approved curriculum min. 600h program of in-class supervised classroom and practical hands-on instruction
    • Successful completion of a national competency exam
  2. Endorsement
    • Have a current license issued in another state which state requirements were substantially equivalent to Illinois requirements at the time the license was issued
    • Successful completion of a national competency exam

The Massage Therapist License expires on December 31 of even number years.

Continuing Education Information

Massage therapists in Illinois are required to complete 24 CE hours for each two-year term. Of the 24 CE hours, 2 CE hours must be in Ethics.

Massage therapists that are also registered with a professional association may have additional continuing education requirements. Massage therapists should refer to their professional association for continuing education standards and requirements.

Most associations accept courses approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) and/or the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Refer to your professional association for details.
