Massage Therapy

General Information

Massage Therapy is governed by the Delaware Board of Massage and Bodywork, which is governed by the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation.

The State of Delaware has two categories of certification:

  1. Certified Massage Technician

This designation requires the following at minimum:

  • Successful completion of min. 300h of supervised in-class study from a school of massage/bodywork or an approved program of massage or bodywork therapy

2. Licensed Massage Therapist

This designation requires the following at minimum:

  • Successful completion of 500 h of supervised in-class study from an approved massage/bodywork therapy school or program
  • Successful completion of a national licensing exam (MBLEx or NCBTMB)
  • Criminal background check
  • Current CPR Certification

All Massage and Bodywork licenses/certifications, including establishment licenses, expire on August 31 of even years.

Continuing Education Information

Renewal of the Massage Therapist License & Certification requires 24 CE hours for each two-year term. 

The State of Delaware requires that the 24 CE hours include:

  • 3 hours in Ethics, which may be taken in a classroom or online;
  • 9 hours of Core credits – which must be taken in a classroom setting*
  • 12 hours of Elective or Core credits which may be taken online

*The licensing period ending on August 31, 2022 allows that the 9 hours of core credits may be taken in a classroom, hands-on or online.

Online courses cannot make up more than 50% of total CE hours. All courses must be approved by NCBTMB, AMTA, or Delaware Board of Massage & Bodywork.
