Massage Therapy
General Information
Massage Therapy is governed by the Alaska Board of Massage Therapists.
As of July 1, 2015 the State of Alaska requires massage therapists be licensed by the Alaska Board of Massage Therapists.
To obtain a Massage Therapist License, the State of Alaska Board of Massage Therapists requires the following at minimum:
- Credentials
- A current active, unrestricted license in good standing in another state or country that allows you to practice massage therapy.
- The state or country you are licensed in must have licensing requirements that are substantially equal to or greater than Alaska.OR
- Examination
- Successful completion of min. 625h program of in-class supervised instruction and clinical work from a board approved massage school or board approved apprenticeship program.
- Successful completion of a national competency exam (NCBTMB or MBLEx)
- Complete at least 2 hours of bloodborne pathogens/universal precautions safety training in the 2 years preceding application date.
- Submit a FD-258 fingerprint card and pass state and national criminal history record check.
- Hold current CPR certification
- Submit application and fees
The Massage Therapist License expires on September 30 of odd number years regardless of when the license was issued.
Continuing Education Information
Renewal of the Massage Therapist License requires 16 CE hours for each two-year term, unless the applicant has been licensed for less than 12 months. Of the 16 CE hours, 2 CE hours must be in Ethics.
The State of Alaska accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers in the CE Registry. The State of Alaska also accepts course for continuing education hours from providers approved by the NCBTMB.
