General Information

The State of Colorado requires that massage therapists are licensed by the Colorado Office of Massage Therapy Licensure.

To obtain a State of Colorado Massage Therapy License, the following is required at minimum:

  1. Credentials
    • Successful completion of min. 500 h massage therapy program from an approved school
    • Successful completion of an approved licensing exam (NCBTMB, MBLEx, etc.)OR
  2. Endorsement
  • A massage therapist who is licensed in good standing in another jurisdiction can be licensed by endorsement if the other jurisdiction has standards at least equivalent to those of Colorado. Training is accepted as meeting requirements if the school has a code assigned by the NCBTMB and is in good standing.
  • Endorsement candidates must demonstrate evidence of active practice or continuing education:
    • Active practice is met if an applicant practiced for 400 h during a one-year period during the prior two years; or,
    • A massage therapist who has not been in active practice must demonstrate 24 h of continuing education. This may include up to 2 h of Ethics and 2 h of Practice Building/Office Management.

All Massage Therapist licenses expire on December 31 of even-numbered years.

Continuing Education Information

There are generally no continuing education requirements for Colorado LMTs; however, those who have not completed the minimum practice hours for license renewal may be required to complete continuing education.

The State of Colorado requires 24 CE hours under the following circumstances:

  1. By an Endorsement Candidate where they have not met the definition of “active practice”; or,
  2. By a Massage Therapist whose license expired more than 2 years but less than 5 years ago and does not meet the definition of “active practice” in another jurisdiction.

The State of Colorado accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers approved by the NCBTMB.

Dexterity PD is a proud Approved Provider with the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB). The most current list of our courses approved by the NCBTMB can be found on our NCBTMB Approved Provider Profile Page.

Massage therapists that are also registered with a professional association may have additional continuing education requirements. Massage therapists should refer to their professional association for continuing education standards and requirements.

Most associations accept courses approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) and/or the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Refer to your professional association for details.
