Massage Therapy
General Information
The State of California does not have a State massage licensure agency. Qualified massage therapists can apply for certification with the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC).
Certification is voluntary; however, some jurisdictions require CAMTC certification. CAMTC certification allows a certificate holder to provide massage for compensation in the State of California without having to obtain a local permit.
To obtain CAMTC Certification, the following is required at minimum:
- Successful completion of min. 500 h massage therapy program from a CAMTC-approved school; or,
- Successful completion of education and training received out-of-state that is substantially equivalent to the requirements applied to California school programs.
CAMTC Certification is for a two-year time period.
Continuing Education Information
There are no continuing education requirements for CAMTC Certificate Holders.
Massage therapists that are also registered with a professional association may have additional continuing education requirements. Massage therapists should refer to their professional association for continuing education standards and requirements.
Most associations accept courses approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) and/or the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Refer to your professional association for details.
