Massage Therapy is governed by the South Dakota Board of Massage Therapy, which is a board of the South Dakota Department of Health.
The State of South Dakota* requires the following to obtain a Massage Therapy License:
- Successful completion of a minimum of 500 hours from a recognized massage therapy program
- Successful completion of a national licensing exam (i.e. the MBLEx national licensing exam offered by the FSMTB)
- Malpractice insurance of no less than $250,000.
- Absence of professional misconduct.
The Massage Therapist license must be renewed by September 30 every year.
Renewal of the Massage Therapist License requires the completion of 8 CE every two years.
Licensees are permitted to obtain the 8 CE through online courses.
The State of South Dakota* accepts courses for continuing education hours that have been approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage (NCBTMB), the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB), and the American Medical Massage Association (AMMA).
