Massage Therapy is governed by the Michigan Board of Massage Therapy, a division of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
The State of Michigan* requires the following to obtain a Massage Therapy License:
- As of January 10, 2020, successful completion of a minimum 625-hour approved Massage Therapy program
- Pass either the Federation of State Massage Therapy Board’s Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx), or the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork’s (NCBTMB/NCETMB)
- Successful completion of one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking
- Verification of licensure provided by any state of the United States or country in which you have held a license
- Criminal background check
- Be of good moral character
*Implicit Bias Training – Beginning June 1, 2022, completion of 2 hours of implicit bias training within the 5 years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration is required.
The initial Massage Therapy License is issued for a term of three years from the date of licensing. All subsequent renewals are also valid for three years.
The State of Michigan* requires 18 CE hours per each three-year licensing period. Of the 18 CE, one (1) CE hour must be in the area of pain and symptom management and (1) CE hour of implicit bias training is required for each year of the current license cycle. Of the 18 CE, an additional two (2) CE hours must be in the area of professional ethics and boundaries.
The State of Michigan* accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers in the CE Registry. The State of Michigan also accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers approved by the NCBTMB.
The Michigan Board of Massage Therapy reviews continuing education records in the Department’s electronic tracking system, powered by CE Broker, at the time of license renewal. Our courses are available and listed in CE Broker.Â
