Massage Therapy is governed by the Indiana State Board of Massage Therapy of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.
Previously, Indiana* required certification; however, it has transitioned to a more rigorous set of requirements for licensure.
The State of Indiana requires the following to obtain a Massage Therapist License:
- Successful completion of a min. 625-hour program of in-class supervised instruction and clinical work from an approved Massage Therapy school or program.
- Successful completion of a national competency exam (MBLEx, NCETM, NCBTMB, or NBCA NCE).
- Licensed Massage Therapists are required to hold professional liability insurance.
- Criminal background check.
- Applicants who have been previously licensed, registered, or certified in another state must provide official verification of licensure in other state(s).
The Massage Therapist License expires May 15 of every fourth year (2025, 2029, 2033).
Renewal of the Massage Therapist License requires 24 CE for each four-year term. Of those 24 CE, two (2) must be in ethics.Â
Prior to the May 2025 renewal, licensed MTs are required to complete 18 CE.
According to the 2022 Indiana Code, s. 25-1-4-0.2, the State of Indiana* accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers in the CE Registry. The State of Indiana also accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB).
