Massage Therapy is governed by the Florida Board of Massage Therapy.
To obtain a Massage Therapist License, the following are required:
Credentials

- Successful completion of a min. 500-hour program of in-class supervised instruction and clinical work.
- Completion of a 10-hour Florida Laws & Rules course with an approved CE provider or as part of a course of study at a board approved massage school in Florida.
- Submit a background screening through an approved livescan provider.
Examination

- Successful completion of a national competency exam (NCETM, NCETMB, or NESL, or MBLEx).
The department renews Licensed Massage Therapists on August 31, every odd year.
The Florida Board of Massage Therapy requires 24 CE hours per each two-year licensing period. Of the 24 CE, 12 hours must be completed in person, focusing on Massage Therapy techniques, skills, or protocols. Of the 24 CE, an additional two (2) CE hours must be in the area of medical errors. One CE must be focused on human trafficking. Of the 24 CE, an additional two (2) CE hours must be in ethics and two (2) CE hours must be designated to the laws and rules of Massage Therapy in Florida. The Florida Board of Massage Therapy requires an approved HIV/AIDS course for each renewal.Â
The State of Florida* accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers approved by the NCBTMB.Â
The Florida Department of Health reviews continuing education records in the Department’s electronic tracking system, powered by CE Broker, at the time of license renewal. Our courses are available and listed in CE Broker.Â

**Due to COVID-19, during the 2023-2025 renewal period in Florida, the requirement for 12 hours of continuing education has been temporarily adjusted. During this time, those 12 hours can be completed through online or distance learning. These courses must still be related to Massage Therapy techniques, skills or protocols.
