Massage Therapy is governed by the Delaware Board of Massage and Bodywork, which is governed by the Delaware Division of Professional Regulation.
The State of Delaware* has two categories of certification:
Certified Massage Technician
This designation requires the following at minimum:
- Successful completion of min. 300 hours of supervised in-class study from a Massage Therapy school or an approved program of massage or bodywork therapy.
*As of December 31, 2024 existing CMTs can renew licenses, expired CMT licenses cannot be re-issued.
Licensed Massage Therapist
This designation requires the following at minimum:
- As of July 1, 2024, massage therapy education requires completion of 625 hours of supervised in-class study from an approved massage/bodywork therapy school or program.
- Licensees applying for Licensure prior to July 1, 2024, require the successful completion of 500 hours of supervised in-class study from an approved massage/bodywork therapy school or program.
- Successful completion of a national licensing exam (MBLEx or NCBTMB).
- Criminal background check.
- Current CPR Certification.
All massage and bodywork licenses/certifications, including establishment licenses, expire on August 31 of even years.
Renewal of the Massage Therapist License & Certification requires 24 CE hours for each two-year term.
The State of Delaware requires that the 24 CE hours include:
- Three (3) hours in Ethics, which may be taken in a classroom or online;
- Nine (9) hours of Core credits – which must be taken in a classroom setting*
- Twelve (12) hours of Elective or Core credits which may be taken online
Online courses cannot make up more than 50% of total CE hours. All courses must be approved by NCBTMB, AMTA, or Delaware Board of Massage & Bodywork.
