Although massage therapy remains unregulated in the province of Alberta, there is great support for formalizing the Massage Therapy profession.
Professional associations in Alberta have largely taken up the desire to regulate the profession by implementing stringent standards for their members.
To join a professional association and be eligible to bill for health insurance, a 2,200-hour training program must be completed.
Professional associations in Alberta set their own individual continuing education requirements for their members.
The Massage Therapist Association of Alberta (MTAA) requires all members to complete 30 PD credits over a three-year Education Cycle. All members follow the same Educational Cycle. The MTAA recognizes all learning activities as Primary credits effective January 1, 2025.
Current and future Education Cycles are:
January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2027
January 1, 2028 – December 31, 2030
The Certified Registered Massage Therapist Association (CRMTA) requires all members to complete 30 CEC credits every three-year term. A maximum 10 of the 30 credits can be “secondary” credits. CRMTA memberships are renewed annually from the date joined.
The Canadian Massage & Manual Osteopathic Therapists Association (CMMOTA) requires all members to complete 30 CEC every CEC cycle. Submission cycles are three years long and run from January 1 to December 31 (these cycles match the MTAA cycles listed above).
