Massage Therapist
Massage Therapy is governed by the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy.
The State of Alabama* requires that anyone operating or advertising as a massage therapist or offering massage therapy services be licensed by the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy, unless specifically exempt.
The State of Alabama Massage Therapist License requires the following at minimum:
- Successful completion of a min. 650h program from an accredited massage therapy school.
- Successful completion of the NCBTMB or MBLEx exam.
- Obtain and produce evidence of a min. $1,000,000 Personal Liability Insurance coverage.
- Provide a fingerprint and criminal background check.
The Massage Therapist License is for a term of two years.
Occupational Therapists & Occupational Therapist Assistants
Occupational Therapy is governed by the Alabama State Board of Occupational Therapy.
The State of Alabama requires that anyone operating or advertising as a Occupational Therapist be licensed by the Alabama State Board of Occupational Therapy, unless specifically exempt.
The State of Alabama requires the following at minimum:
Occupational Therapists
- Proof of completion from an accredited Occupational Therapy Program recognized by the board
- Provide proof of citizenship or legal immigration
- Pass and provide a letter of verification from NBCOT ExamÂ
- Provide license verification from each state where you hold or have held a license
Occupational Therapist Assistants
- Provide the name of licensed Occupational Therapist supervisor for OTA’sÂ
- Proof of completion from an accredited Occupational Therapy Program recognized by the board
- Provide proof of citizenship or legal immigrationÂ
- Pass and provide a letter of verification from NBCOT ExamÂ
- Provide license verification from each state where you hold or have held a license
Massage Therapists
Renewal of the Massage Therapist License requires 16 CE hours for each two-year term.
*Effective June 2026, each Massage Therapist must submit eight (8) mandatory contact hours developed, approved, or provided by the board related to the legal aspects of Massage Therapy practice, discipline, human trafficking, and illegal practice as part of the required 16 hours of continuing education required for the first renewal subsequent to June 30, 2026
The State of Alabama* accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers in the CE Registry. The State of Alabama also accepts courses for continuing education hours from providers approved by the NCBTMB.

Occupational TherapistsÂ
The Occupational Therapists License is renewed biennially.
An Occupational Therapist must obtain 1.5 CEUs or 15 contact hours annually or 3.0 CEUs or 30 contact hours biennially. A maximum of 1/3 of continuing education credits may be administration/management/academic related. The remainder hours must be related to direct patient treatment. A maximum of 1/3 hours can be generated by the therapist’s professional presentations.Â
Occupational Therapist Assistants
The Occupational Therapists Assistants License is renewed biennially.
Occupational Therapist Assistants must obtain 1.0 CEU or 10 contact hours) annually or 2.0 CEUs or 20 contact hours, biennially. A maximum of 1/3 of continuing education hours may beÂ
administration/management/academic related. The remaining credits must be related to direct patient treatment. A maximum of 1/3 hours can be generated by the therapist’s professional presentations.
